A Headache in the Pelvis: A New Understanding and Treatment for Prostatitis and Chronic Pelvic Pain Syndromes, 4th edition. Wise, D, Anderson, R. 2007. Gives good self-help treatment techniques to help with the pain and outlines what to expect with physical therapy.
The V Book: A Doctor’s Guide to Complete Vulvovaginal Health. Stewart, Elizabeth. Bantom Books, 2002. This is a fabulous book written by a vulvovaginal specialist. She goes over treatment approaches, interactions and questions to ask your specialist. It even gives you suggestions for undergarments that help to decrease your symptoms.
The Vulvodynia Survival Guide: How to Overcome Painful Vaginal Symptoms and Enjoy an Active Lifestyle. Howard, I, Ph.D. New Harbinger Publications, 2002. This book has a few chapters on the psychological aspects of this disorder. It is more a book for the newly diagnosed patient.
Beyond Kegels. Fabulous four exercises and more… to prevent and treat incontinence. Hulme, JA. Montana: Phoenix Publishing Co., 1997 (Rev. 2002). This book is written by a physical therapist who has significant experience in childbirth education. This is a good resource for patients to give them information on when to seek out help and what treatments are available.
Bouncing Back Into Shape after Baby. Creager, CC. Colorado: Executive Physical Therapy, Inc., 2001. Caroline Creager is a physical therapist who specializes in women’s health. This is a general book covering anatomy, as well as proper body mechanics, posture and exercise to help you return to your pre-baby figure.
Infant Massage: A handbook for loving parents. McClure, Vimala. New York: Bantom Books, 1979 (Rev. 2002). Vimala McClure is the founder of the International Association of Infant massage. She explains step-by-step the massage process to ease your baby’s discomfort, release tension, help premature infants gain weight and assist in breathing.
Infant Massage: The Power of Touch. DVD. The video was conducted by Ines Benedict, a licensed neuromuscular therapist, who leads you step-by-step in baby massage. There is also a question-answer section where a nurse and childbirth instructor answer common questions about infant massage. 47 minutes, plus 45 minutes of bonus features.
Every Woman’s Guide to Eating During Pregnancy. Shulman, Martha Rose; Davis, Jane M.D. New York: Houghton Mifflin Company, 2002. This guide gives you great meals for each trimester based on your growing baby’s needs, as well as meals for nursing mothers.
A Natural Guide to Pregnancy and Postpartum Health. Raffelock, Dean; Rountree, Robert. New York: Penquin Putnam, Inc. 2002. This book is written by two doctors. The initial part of the book may be overwhelming with the terminology, but after the first chapter they go into specific case studios, as well as safe supplements to take postpartum. There is also one chapter devoted to breastfeeding- what to avoid and if how to solve certain problems if you develop them (mastitis, insufficient milk supply,etc.)
